Today was a very lazy day. I decided to catch up on sleep and try to recover from the plague before I start my classes tomorrow. Mitch and I awoke to the loudest and longest parade ever that was yards away from our window.
It was a neighborhood parade for Memorial Day and I'm sure it was very lovely but I wouldn't have minded if it had a mute feature. Late afternoon we ventured outside of the apartment and took a long walk around the neighborhood. I wanted to explore nearby areas that Mitch didn't know about. We found an amazing and cheap organic food market, a sushi restaurant, a live mariachi band, a beautiful old cemetery, a quaint little park and the Slavic/Polish Bank Union.
It was nice to see some green areas nearby. We also ate at one of the only stand alone restaurants to be found in NYC. It is a cute restaurant in our neighborhood called Montas. It was here that I finally found one of my favorite meals that I can usually only find when I'm visiting Puerto Rico. It consists of rice, beans and fried plantains. Mitch had a deluxe cheeseburger. This amazing meal totaled at less than $11!
We spent the rest of the day sleeping and trying to establish a regular internet connection. It turns out that even robots in NY give you attitude. The robot asked me if I plugged my modem back in and when I responded that I had, the robot girl said "Oh, well that usually works." Robot bitch. I finished off the night by getting an omelet from my favorite restaurant next door called Ridgewood Eats.
In more interesting news, I will attach links to my favorite college youtube videos that I rediscovered today (
Aicha and
Tunak Tunak). Also, I don't know if you saw this
Celine Dion response to Hurricane Katrina, but it is amazing! What is not amazing is the Celine Dion Heart cover that Mitch is forcing me listen to right now on repeat. Between this and the Leona Lewis cd it's worse than living with Steve Knox. Kelly-you are going to have to watch this new
Karen Javitch video that Mitch and I found. The creepiest part is that is her son. Also, everybody NEEDS to watch the follow up to the
Montgomery strip mall guy.
Tomorrow is my first day of class. Wish me luck. I hope you all had an amazing long weekend.
